Tuesday thoughts

So, I looked back to do a wordless weekend post because I skipped it yesterday and realized something, I didn't take one photo.

If you follow me on the Twitter, you know that my Saturday was spent being a Donestic Diva, Goddess if you will! I got up early ( well early for me) and had a massage, got a haircut, went to walmart, shopped for my work meeting this week, and started 2 loads of laundry all before 1.  It was a productive day. I love those kinds of Saturdays. And, it ended with grilled burgers and movies with some if my favorite dudes. Nothing bad about that!

But when I looked at my last photo in my album on my phone, I saw this one.

It was taken last Thursday night at the Lady Razorbacks home game. That chick right there is my college roommate, Brooke.

I love that she can text me out of no where and let me know she is going to be in my backyard and thought to include me in her evening plans. I love that I got to see her energetic and hilarious daughter. I love that her husband is my friend too, a man I respect and love how he loves her. And I love that we just pick up where we left off last time.

I miss her. I miss what we had in college. I mean, talking late at night on bunk bed with sweatshirts on and crazy hair. What's not to love. I miss hearing her Friends DVD on repeat in our living room. But I'm so grateful for what we had there. I'm grateful for her friendship and I'm grateful for the journeys we've encountered along the way.

Friends are treasures. And I loved this sweet reminder and the laughs shared last week!

vday foodie

So, yesterday I got to hang out with the Mississippi Women Bloggers as their Feb 14 (Vday) #foodiefriday guest blogger.

You should see what I share with them.

Yes, it was written from a Texas girl in Arkansas to a bunch of Mississippi chicks - we are talking lots of accents involved here!

On a similar but un-related note, did you see the moon tonight?

Girls night honesty

This past weekend, I had the chance to attend the Womenade Pajama Party with my gal Rhonda.  Just think a bunch of women, many of whom don't know each other gathering in the lobby of a local hotel with a local DJ and Zumba instructors.  For my friends who have issues about wearing pajamas in public, this was one of those parties where you bust out the "for public" pajamas and just go with it.  Yes, there was a photo booth and snacks.  But what I enjoyed more was making a few observations about why chicks get into these kinds of things or as I've decided to call it -

"Why girls like hanging with their girlfriends"

  • When you pack for a sleep over with girls all you need is a couple pairs of pajamas and a corkscrew (or fanny pack). No judgments passed.

  • BYOB means, "hey girl I got an extra diet coke and it's late, you need one to stay up and keep talking?" Dudes, well they hide their stash in a flask in their pocket and don't share.
  • We know their will be food, plenty of food. But we bring an impressive treat from the grocery store just in case we find a snobby friend who can't eat chicken wings and celery. Hey I get it. I have heartburn too.
  • We can take out our contacts and put on our glasses at 8PM and not worry if the people in the room will still talk to us.
  • Because a photo booth can entertain us for hours.

  • Because bringing feminine hygiene products as an entry fee seems like a perfectly philanthropic idea - I mean really tampons and panty liners got us past the front door (PJs were appropriate, too)
  • Because the next morning we can gather in the lobby before 9 and laugh about whatever silly shenanigans we said or did the night before. Dudes, they strive to avoid eye contact so they don't have to do the awkward, "hey man" when they don't want to talk. Girls, we just get loud and proud.
  • Karaoke with your girl friends means a song from the 80s completely terrible and off key. When dudes are present-only the girls who are actual singers are fighting over ballads from the current top 100s chart.
  • having an all natural spa take over a hotel room and administer free foot care (complete with a towel warmer in the bathroom) and facials seems like a perfectly appropriate idea  - even if you didn't shave your legs or wax your eyebrows... and then we walked around the lobby with collagen restoration pads under our eyes.  Jealousy, not judgment.
Yea, we had a fantastic time, laughed hard, ate really awesome dips from a tableful of crock pots, sang loud, danced louder and went back to our rooms at 11:30PM and were up at 8:30AM.  I know, crazy Saturday shenanigans!

its a calling

so, I have the fortunate gift of working at a job that I truly see as a calling.  as a matter of fact, I've always worked at a job that I saw as a calling.

I really thought about this last fall while teaching a junior achievement class.  in one of our classroom sessions we talked about the "non-negotiables" of our job or work environment.  And one of mine was mission.  (my list also included creativity and working with people/public).

But last night, I had an experience that reminded me why I do what I do.

I had a young lady contact me through Facebook and say, "you don't know me, but I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma on Friday and _________ told me to contact you".  And, just like that the reports, the forms, the conference calls, the strategies, the obstacles; they all made sense and at the same time seemed completely senseless.  In less that 7 days, I've had 3 reminders that the fight isn't over or even slowing down.  2 were people my age and another was my moms.  All, way too young to deal with the "c" word.

But, we don't often get to tell the world what it can and cant give us.  We don't get to say what it can and cannot take from us.

Its a calling - a calling that chose me.  Sometimes we get to pick a passion, but more often than not, our passion develops from the journey our road takes.

So, I wonder about you, are you living out your passion.  I'm not meaning are you drawing a paycheck from it, but do you live it out?

bye bye january

so, if were new friends, I want to let you in on a little secret.

I'm not a January fan.

Not in any way shape or form.  its grey.  bleak.  usually frigid.  boring and such a downer after all the holiday festivities.  I mean its nice to not have to be in a bajillion places like I did last month, but I find I'm always busier because I'm filling my days to keep busy.

So, since its February 1, I guess I can say I survived another January.

It wasn't all bad.  I've had some transitions at work that have allowed me to pass off some responsibilities and really get creative. Just yesterday I put the finishing touches on my work calendar for February.  And, while I've got to tackle the details, I'm planned ahead!  Which you know makes me so happy.

I'm in control of my calendar.  I'm not letting it control me.

Tonight I'm hanging out with some of my favorite chicks at Womenade Pajama Party and have a catch up coffee date set with one of my girlfriends.  Feb 1 is already proving to be better than the last!

Do you have anything you are REALLY looking forward to this month?

I'm out...leftover pizza is calling my name!
